Chapter Thirty-Seven

I see my mom working on a beautiful flower display and grin while placing the bag of tea in my pocket. I approach her, knowing I can’t talk to her about Nox just yet, but eventually I’ll have to. I just don’t want her to get mad and tell me absolutely not, in her defensive tone. Forbidding me to even talk to him. I can’t trust her right now with all those pregnancy hormones making her more aggressive than usual.

She’s the one who’s grounded in reality in this house. A solid foundation. Not that my dad isn’t that for us, but Mom is the rock. I think every family has one.

Usually, I’m also grounded, but Nox has changed that for me. I can feel it in my bones. Everything has a different feel now. He was a pleasant surprise.

The only thing that tells me that she isn’t as steadfast as she claims to be is her love for my dad. He’s the complete opposite of her in almost all ways, but they make it work.

That gives me hope for the future.

For me.

For Nox.

I swallow hard. I shouldn’t be thinking about things like that, but I can’t help it. My mind jumps ahead and starts creating scenarios without my control.

I take a breath and smell the roses. This display has a few of them, along with some daisies, baby’s breath, and a few other flowers. It’s bursting with color.

“It’s beautiful,” I say while she keeps working at it.

She steps back and places her hands on her hips. “This is a prototype. Do you like it, really?” she asks.

I nod. “I do. I think it’s gorgeous. Anyone would be happy to have this one.”

She tilts her head and goes back to work on it. “Do you want something?”

I laugh. “No— why?”

She grins. “You usually don’t say a thing about what I’m working on.”

“Well, I think it’s beautiful and it smells amazing.”

“Did you go over on our minutes plan?”

“No, Mom. Seriously, I just think it’s pretty.”

She lets out a sigh, then wipes her forehead with the back of her hand. “I’m sorry. Of course, you do, honey. I’m just tired.” She reaches down and rubs the bump that is my sister. “I didn’t expect to be this worn out.”

I step up next to her and hug her from the side. She grins and kisses me on top of the head. My mom is very practical but she’s never denied me any sort of love. She’s always hugged me and kissed me, and made sure that I know she cares about me.

“I’m going to go see what Bradley is doing, okay?” I know it’s partially true, so I don’t feel so bad.

“Sure, honey. Dinner will be at six, so please try to be home on time, okay?”

I glance at my phone. It’s four. I have plenty of time. “What are we having?”

She laughs while glancing upward. “Your dad won’t tell me, so prepare yourself for anything.”

I giggle. Dad’s always trying new recipes, but he usually pulls them off.
