Chapter Thirty-Seven
I see my mom working on a beautiful flower display and grin while placing the bag of tea in my pocket. I approach her, knowing I canât talk to her about Nox just yet, but eventually Iâll have to. I just donât want her to get mad and tell me absolutely not, in her defensive tone. Forbidding me to even talk to him. I canât trust her right now with all those pregnancy hormones making her more aggressive than usual.
Sheâs the one whoâs grounded in reality in this house. A solid foundation. Not that my dad isnât that for us, but Mom is the rock. I think every family has one.
Usually, Iâm also grounded, but Nox has changed that for me. I can feel it in my bones. Everything has a different feel now. He was a pleasant surprise.
The only thing that tells me that she isnât as steadfast as she claims to be is her love for my dad. Heâs the complete opposite of her in almost all ways, but they make it work.
That gives me hope for the future.
For me.
For Nox.
I swallow hard. I shouldnât be thinking about things like that, but I canât help it. My mind jumps ahead and starts creating scenarios without my control.
I take a breath and smell the roses. This display has a few of them, along with some daisies, babyâs breath, and a few other flowers. Itâs bursting with color.
âItâs beautiful,â I say while she keeps working at it.
She steps back and places her hands on her hips. âThis is a prototype. Do you like it, really?â she asks.
I nod. âI do. I think itâs gorgeous. Anyone would be happy to have this one.â
She tilts her head and goes back to work on it. âDo you want something?â
I laugh. âNoâ why?â
She grins. âYou usually donât say a thing about what Iâm working on.â
âWell, I think itâs beautiful and it smells amazing.â
âDid you go over on our minutes plan?â
âNo, Mom. Seriously, I just think itâs pretty.â
She lets out a sigh, then wipes her forehead with the back of her hand. âIâm sorry. Of course, you do, honey. Iâm just tired.â She reaches down and rubs the bump that is my sister. âI didnât expect to be this worn out.â
I step up next to her and hug her from the side. She grins and kisses me on top of the head. My mom is very practical but sheâs never denied me any sort of love. Sheâs always hugged me and kissed me, and made sure that I know she cares about me.
âIâm going to go see what Bradley is doing, okay?â I know itâs partially true, so I donât feel so bad.
âSure, honey. Dinner will be at six, so please try to be home on time, okay?â
I glance at my phone. Itâs four. I have plenty of time. âWhat are we having?â
She laughs while glancing upward. âYour dad wonât tell me, so prepare yourself for anything.â
I giggle. Dadâs always trying new recipes, but he usually pulls them off.
